Everything you need to know about crystal clear acrylic sheet

Clear acrylic sheet is not only just as clear but also 2 x as light and 30 x as strong as ordinary glass, which is why it is often used as a replacement. Moreover, it is easy to work with, even by the DIYer.

Applications of clear acrylic cut to size

Thanks to the excellent UV-resistant qualities of our clear acrylic sheets, they can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications, from secondary glazing and door canopies to caravan and boat windows and balcony glazing.

Types of clear perspex

In our webshop, you will find two types of acrylic sheets: moulded (cast) and budget (extruded) perspex. The difference between the two types of acrylic occurs during production. The liquid acrylic is poured into a mould. In the case of budget acrylic sheet, it is then rolled to a thinner sheet thickness. In this way, a relatively large sheet surface can be made with less raw material. This ensures a very favourable price-quality ratio and that’s why we also call this type of acrylic budget acrylic.

We stock a large range of crystal clear acrylic sheets in thicknesses of 3 to 30 millimetres, with a maximum surface area of 230 x 100 centimetres.

Working with clear perspex

Moulded acrylic is easier to process than budget acrylic. The budget sheets are more stressed and are therefore more liable to crack during processing. Machining is possible but be extra careful. Better still, opt for the greater strength of a moulded acrylic sheet. These sheets are suitable for processes such as lettering, drilling, (hot) bending, turning, milling, engraving, lasering, glueing, polishing, painting, cutting and sawing with a circular or jigsaw.

Properties of clear perspex

Clear acrylic maintenance

Cleaning and keeping acrylic looking its best requires a little more attention than cleaning traditional glass. Acrylic is more scratch-sensitive.

Characteristics of clear acrylic sheets

We can supply both cast and extruded clear acrylic sheets. Cast acrylic sheets are made by pouring the raw material into moulds to create strong, large sheets. The sheets leave the factory at a standard size of 230 by 100 centimetres. Extruded acrylic sheets are processed by rolling several times to achieve the desired final thickness. And though this method requires less raw material, it does increase the internal tension within the sheet. The internal tension makes extruded acrylic sheets more prone to break when it’s being worked. We therefore recommend cast acrylic sheeting if you intend to alter the surface. To indicate the difference between the two versions, we have named all extruded acrylic sheets ‘Cheap acrylic’. Before choosing an acrylic sheet, we recommend that you consider the project. If it requires working on the acrylic sheet, we would advise to buy a cast acrylic sheet. If there is no need to alter the surface of the material, an extruded acrylic sheet will be a good option.

Clear acrylic plastic is 30 times more impact resistant than regular glass and it has a 92% transparency. This crystal clear material also has the ability to filter UV light, making the sheets suitable for many outdoor applications. For example, they can be used as windows, door canopies, caravan and boat windows and balcony glazing. Clear acrylic is a choice material for DIY projects. The sheets are easy to work with using standard DIY tools. Even without a lot of experience, acrylic sheets can easily be cut, sawed or drilled. Bending an acrylic sheet requires heating it in an oven or with a heat gun. Acrylic is a thermoplastic material, meaning the sheets will soften as they are heated. Compared to regular glass, acrylic only has one main downside: it’s more likely to get scratched.Scratches can be easily removed by polishing the surface. You can order any acrylic sheet cut to size! Acrylic sheeting lends itself to a wide range of versatile applications, so please contact us if you would like more information.
