Everything you need to know about acrylic glass

Acrylic glass is a well known and popular plastic. Indeed, this widely used material is easy to work with yourself, very strong, lightweight and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Acrylic glass is available in more than 40 colours and 10 different thicknesses. Curious to find out more about this material? We tell you everything you need to know about it, on this page.

Cast acrylic glass

Cast acrylic glass, also known as GS (cast) acrylic glass, is a high-quality and versatile type of acrylic glass. Below is a list of the most important properties of cast acrylic glass.

Thickness tolerance
It has a higher thickness tolerance than XT (extruded) acrylic glass, meaning the thickness is less consistent across the surface of the sheet.

Machinability
Cast acrylic glass is more machinable and is easier to saw, drill, mill and engrave than the extruded variant.

Resistance
Cast acrylic glass is UV resistant and retains its colour and brightness over time, even when exposed to sunlight.

Applications
This type is ideal for a wide range of applications, including display cases, furniture, aquariums, and billboards.

Extruded acrylic glass

Extruded acrylic glass (XT) is made by a continuous process in which the liquid acrylic glass is pressed through a mould to achieve the desired thickness. Below are the properties of extruded acrylic glass.

Thickness tolerance
It has a lower and therefore better thickness tolerance, which means there can be less variation in the thickness of the sheet across the surface.

Machinability
Although still machinable, extruded acrylic glass is more susceptible to cracking and breaking during machining than cast acrylic glass. This is due to the extrusion, which puts stress on the sheet. Therefore, this variant breaks faster than the stress free cast sheets.

Price
In general, extruded acrylic glass is more budget friendly to produce, and therefore often more favourably priced to purchase.

Applications
Its price and properties make this type of acrylic glass sheet suitable for large scale projects and applications where the thickness of the material is of greater importance.

The advantages of acrylic glass

Acrylic glass is durable and weather resistant, which makes it ideal for a variety of applications. The material is versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. Acrylic glass requires little maintenance and is easy to clean.

Processing possibilities

Budget acrylic glass is made of extruded acrylic glass (XT). Due to the production method, there is more stress on the sheet, so it can crack faster during processing. Drilling, hot bending, milling, engraving, gluing, polishing and sawing are all possible, but be extremely careful. Do you want to do a lot of processing? Then we recommend choosing cast acrylic glass sheets. The chance of these sheets cracking is minimal.
