At Plasticsheetsshop, you have come to the right place for a wide range of acrylic sheets. Our range of acrylic sheets is extensive and all available colours and types can be found in our webshop. Moreover, we saw each order free of charge. The choice is huge, and we know that so much choice can be stressful. However, the most frequently asked question we get about acrylic sheet is: which sheet thickness do I need? We provide more information about this in this blog.
In order to easily calculate which sheet thickness is most suitable for your application, we have developed the thickness calculator aid.
Sheet thickness depends on the application
For glazing applications, we always recommend maintaining the same thickness as the glass being replaced. This applies to glazing for garden sheds, additional windows and photo frames. By maintaining the same sheet thickness you are assured of a good fit. In addition, you gain the great advantage of the much higher impact resistance of acrylic sheet.
Do you want to build or construct something using acrylic, for example as a result of an idea on the internet? In this case, you can safely maintain the recommended sheet thickness. If you are not sure about it, choose the sheet thickness 1 millimetre thicker. This gives a great advantage in strength, certainly with sheet thicknesses between 2 and 6 millimetres. Of course, you can always contact us as we have the necessary knowledge and experience to advise you on suitable sheet thickness.
Aquarium or windshield? Cast acrylic and no thinner than 6 millimetres!
hoDo you want to build a windshield or an aquarium? In these applications, the acrylic sheet will be subject to heavy loads and it is important to choose an extra thick sheet, purely from the point of view of safety. We strongly recommend that you always opt for cast acrylic! For windshields with a sheet width of 1 metre, we recommend a sheet thickness of 8 millimetres, and for every 50 centimetres that the sheet is wider, the sheet must be 1 millimetre thicker.
For aquariums, it is important to calculate the required sheet thickness properly. This is also to do with the consequential damage of leakage and the associated damage. Our advice: better safe than sorry and choose extra thick acrylic, especially with aquariums with a capacity of more than 120 litres.
