How does an infinity mirror work?

An infinity mirror may look complex, but the principle is simple and brilliant. You create the illusion of infinite depth by placing a mirror sheet and a sheet with semi-translucent mirror film opposite each other. The LED strips are hidden in the space between. The light from the LEDs reflects endlessly back and forth between the sheets, with only a portion passing through the semi-translucent layer to the front, resulting in that distinctive infinity effect.

1Preparing the frame

Start by cleaning your frame. Use an anti-static cleaner and a lint-free cloth to ensure the frame is free of dust and grease, which helps the LED strips to adhere properly. It’s important that the frame is at least 5 centimetres deep so there is enough space for the LEDs.

2Attaching the LED strips

Take the LED lights and attach them along the inner edge of the frame. Use Rody-Rapid super glue for a strong bond. Allow the LED strips to run evenly around the edge. If you desire a more powerful effect, consider placing multiple layers of LED strips on top of each other. Ensure everything is securely attached and neatly distributed.

3Cutting the mirror film to size

Carefully measure your clear acrylic. Accurate measurement is crucial, so place the acrylic on the mirror film to trace the size if necessary. Then use sharp scissors or a knife to cut the mirror film precisely, so it fits perfectly on the acrylic.

4Cleaning the clear acrylic

Remove the protective film from both sides of the acrylic. Use an anti-static cleaner and a lint-free cloth to thoroughly clean the glass. This step is important to ensure the mirror film adheres perfectly without any issues..

5Applying the mirror film

Take the semi-translucent mirror film and gently apply it to the inside of your clear acrylic sheet. Start from one side and work slowly to the other, smoothing out any air bubbles with a credit card. Ensure the film is applied tautly and evenly for a flawless finish.

6Assembly

Start by placing the acrylic mirror sheet at the back of the frame. Ensure it sits perfectly in place. Next, take the frame with the LED lighting already secured and position it on top of the mirror sheet. Ensure the LED strips fit well and no light spills over the edge. Then, place the clear acrylic sheet, with the neatly applied mirror film, at the front of the construction.

Ensure everything is aligned and straight. Use Rody-Rapid superglue to firmly bond the parts together. If you want extra stability, use clamps to hold the sheets in place while they dry. If needed, you can also drill holes and add screws for an extra sturdy construction.

Conclusion

Congratulations! By following these steps, you’ve crafted an impressive decorative piece: your very own infinity mirror. By experimenting with different colours of LEDs, you can further personalise the effect for your space.
