Alucobond® sheets: everything you need to know

Alucobond® is a well-known name, as an aluminium composite sheet. With its mineral filled core and high rigidity, this material delivers a good performance, making it suitable for a variety of applications. But there are also excellent standard alternatives, such as the high quality aluminium composite sheets Dibond® and Alupanel. We chose these because we can supply these sheets quickly and inexpensively. So although we do not sell Alucobond® ourselves, it is still a great product. That’s why we are happy to tell you about it.

Our wide range of aluminium composite boards includes almost 20 colours and a number of popular thicknesses. So the board you are looking for is certainly among them. We will also customise the sheet of your choice for you, before sending it to you securely packaged.

Did you know that…
Alucobond® and Dibond® are both made by the same leading manufacturer: 3A Composites.

What are the different names of Alucobond® sheets?

You sometimes come across Alucobond® sheets under other names. They are basically the same material. We have chosen the A-brands Alupanel and Dibond® from this product list. You can find these in our webshop.

What types of Alucobond® are there?

Alucobond®, like Alupanel and Dibond®, belongs to the large group of aluminium composite plates. Characteristic of these sheets is that you can use them for a variety of purposes. These are sheets that print very well, sheets with beautiful colour coatings, and sheets with a brushed metal look. The thickness of the aluminium layer may vary per brand or variant: manufacturers are always looking for a balance between cost, weight and strength.

Usually the core is made of a plastic such as LDPE, but in the case of Alucobond®, a different type of core is used. In fact, there are three different variants of Alucobond®, each with a slightly different core:

1. Alucobond® PLUS: mineral filled polymer core with a fire class B
2. Alucobond® A2: mineral filled core with fire class A2
3. Alucore: aluminium honeycomb core with fire class A2 and excellent mechanical properties.

For which applications are Alucobond® sheets suitable?

Thanks to their strong and durable construction, Alucobond® sheets can be used indoors and outdoors. Especially as facade cladding, these sheets come into their own as they are extra rigid and fire resistant. Both homes and offices can benefit greatly from them. Besides facade cladding, Alucobond® sheets can also be used in many other ways. Think of decorative applications in the interior or practical applications such as signage and billboards. You name it, you can do it with Alucobond®! And the same goes for our alternatives Alupanel and Dibond®. You can use Alucobond® for, for example:

Outside Indoor
Facade Cladding Cladding counters
Motorhome cladding Shower wall

What are the processing possibilities of Alucobond® sheets?

Composite boards such as Alucobond® can be machined in numerous ways. Think of milling, sawing, coating and painting. If you have tools for working hardwood (from a router, a drill, or various saws), you can usually use them just as easily for Alucobond® sheets. Assembling these boards takes no effort either.

Mounting an Alucobond® sheet

You can assemble most aluminium composite sheets very easily. The same applies to Alucobond®. If you want a nice flat result, choose gluing. This is best done with Bostik High Tack Premium H980 mounting sealant. Our range also includes special panel holders and spacers that make it even easier to fit Alucobond® tightly.

Tip!
If you are going to glue using High Tack Premium H980 mounting sealant, take the slight movement of the material into account. To compensate for expansion and contraction, you need to allow for about 1 mm extra space per metre of panel.

What are the properties of an Alucobond® sheet?

An Alucobond® sheet consists of three layers: two aluminium top layers 0.5 mm thick with a plastic core in between. The top layers of this ‘sandwich sheet’ are thicker than normal, which results in a stiffer sheet. These layers are also hardly susceptible to chemicals.

The combination of plastic and metal gives Alucobond® sheets a contemporary and luxurious appearance. The sheets are easy to work with, and still look as good after 30 years as when they were first installed, provided they are well maintained. It certainly helps that the sheets are resistant to changing weather conditions, extreme temperatures (from -50°C up to +80°C), moisture and UV radiation. And that is the beauty of aluminium composite panels: you get the look of coated aluminium without the high cost and weight.

The most important properties of Alucobond® are:

  • Available in many colours
  • UV resistant
  • Moisture resistant
  • Frost resistant
  • A quality
  • Lightweight
  • Four standard thicknesses
  • Operating temperature -50 up to +80 degrees Celsius
  • Protective film on both sides
  • Very suitable as facade cladding
  • Easy to process
  • Easy to maintain

How do I maintain an Alucobond® sheet?

Maintaining Alucobond® sheets is a piece of cake. If you do this regularly, it will definitely improve the appearance and lifespan of the sheets. You should also bear in mind that all aluminium composite boards are static and attract dust. It is therefore best to clean the plates with an anti-static cloth and an anti-static cleaner, such as Burnus. This will immediately prevent the slab from attracting dust. Kenothek Brilliant is also an excellent way to treat Alucobond® sheets. Even a simple hand brush can do a good job. To get you started, we have put together a handy cleaning instruction.
