Everything you need to know about hard PVC sheet

Hard plastic PVC is a popular material for interior applications. These panels are relatively heavy, especially if you compare them with foamed PVC sheets, which are twice as light. Solid PVC sheet is resistant to chemical substances. This type of sheet is therefore ideal for making drip trays or sinks for chemical substances. In addition, hard PVC sheets will not crack and are therefore vandal proof.

What is a solid PVC sheet?

A solid PVC sheet (also known as rigid or hard PVC) is a dense, durable plastic designed for technical and industrial applications where strength and chemical resistance are essential.

Unlike foamed PVC, solid PVC has a compact structure, making it stronger, more impact-resistant and better suited for environments where the material may be exposed to liquids, chemicals or mechanical stress.

Key characteristics of solid PVC sheets

Solid PVC is a practical, reliable material with properties that make it ideal for technical use:

  • Strong and Impact-Resistant: A rigid structure that holds its shape well and resists cracking under pressure.
  • Excellent Chemical Resistance: Performs well when exposed to acids, oils and other chemicals, ideal for industrial environments.
  • Electrically Insulating: Commonly used in electrical applications due to its insulating properties.
  • Flame Resistant & Self-Extinguishing: Offers added safety in environments where fire resistance is important.
  • Easy to Machine and Fabricate: Can be cut, drilled, milled and shaped using standard tools.
  • Moisture Resistant: Does not absorb water, making it suitable for damp or wet conditions.
  • Temperature Resistant (Up to ~60°C): Maintains performance in moderate heat conditions.

Applications of solid PVC sheets

Rigid PVC is commonly used for:

  • Chemical trays and tanks
  • Electrical enclosures and insulation
  • Fabrication and engineering projects
  • Displays and structural components

It’s also easy to work with using standard tools, allowing you to cut, drill, shape and assemble it to suit your project.

Types of rigid PVC

Rigid PVC sheets are available in the colours white, dark grey and transparent. We offer the sheets in a range of thicknesses from 2 mm to 20 mm.

Working with hard PVC

Hard PVC is solid and easy to work with. You can drill, cut, laser, paint, letter, mill, weld, turn and glue with a special PVC glue. You can also deform this type of sheet with heat and saw with a circular or jigsaw.

Maintenance of solid PVC

Solid PVC requires little maintenance. With normal use of the sheet material, in a relatively clean environment, you only need to clean the panels once or twice a year. Check our tips for cleaning PVC.

Useful to know:
PVC is a static plastic that attracts dust quickly. Treat the panel with a special antistatic cleaner for plastic sheets.
