A balcony privacy screen can be made of different material, including plastic, glass, plants, fabric, wood, reed or bamboo. With the right screen, you can also protect your balcony from various weather conditions.

Types of screens for your balcony

Balcony privacy screens are often used for complete privacy, but you can also use a balcony screen more for decoration. There are therefore different types of balcony privacy screens for different purposes. Common types of balcony privacy screens are listed below:

  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Wicker
  • Wood
  • Bamboo
  • Plants

Plastic balcony privacy screen

HPL, Trespa®, acrylic and polycarbonate are all suitable materials to use as balcony privacy screens. HPL and Trespa® are not transparent, whereas acrylic and polycarbonate are available as a clear option. All our materials come in a wide range of thicknesses, colours and finishes. And of course it is super easy to order cut-to-size using the order module. You enter your desired shape and dimensions, with drill holes or cut-outs already included!

HPL: an opaque material, ideal for half or full partitions. Can be ordered cut-to-size with pre-drilled holes to replace your current partitions or install new ones.

Acrylic: a wide choice of transparent and non-transparent sheets. Always buy a sample to see if the material has the effect you are looking for.

Polycarbonate: a very strong material, stronger than HPL, Trespa®, glass, or acrylic . Polycarbonate is prone to scratching, but any scratches can be repaired by polishing.

Glass balcony privacy screen

Clear balcony privacy screen is naturally clear, and thus not suitable for those seeking privacy. Glass is less impact resistant and if broken, glass will shatter everywhere. So not safe especially where children and pets are present.

Plants as a partition

A planter full of greenery radiates tranquillity. You can arrange different types of plants or herbs according to your taste. This does not offer much privacy unless you place it in front of a dense balcony privacy screen.

Fabric balcony privacy screen

Fabric balcony privacy screen is available in different prints. The downside is that balcony upholstery makes a lot of noise by flapping in the wind, and can quickly discolour by the sun.

Wooden balcony privacy screen

You can place wooden panels or a fence as a balcony privacy screen. This will create a warm atmosphere. Wood should always be varnished well so it doesn’t rot. The disadvantage is that wood is not a durable material, and it needs regular maintenance, such as painting.

How do you determine the thickness of your balcony privacy screen?

The required thickness of the balcony privacy screen depends on the material you choose. The appropriate thicknesses are detailed below. These are based on mountings with at least 3 sides mounted and the shortest side free. We recommend solid mounting so that the balcony privacy screen cannot deform through contraction and expansion or be blown away by the wind.

HPL / Trespa® 6 mm 6 mm 8 mm
Polycarbonate 5 mm 8 mm 10 mm
Acrylic 8 mm 10 mm 12 mm

Our advice

How do you choose a balcony privacy screen?

To make a wise choice, it is important to first determine what is the purpose of your balcony privacy screen. For example, should the balcony screen provide privacy, or is it better to be clear as glass so you can continue to enjoy the view? Do you want a permanent balcony screen, or one you can move? We recommend that you look for a suitable acrylic, polycarbonate or HPL sheet based on your needs.

Mounting options

Balcony privacy screens can be mounted in various ways. The advice is to mount at least three long sides of the sheet with rubber washers and screws. It is important to ensure that there is no tension on the sheets. With temperature changes, acrylic, polycarbonate and HPL can shrink or expand.

In addition, there are of course endless ways to mount your partition. So choose the way you expect to achieve the best result on your balcony. It is only really important to take into account mounting on three sides and possible shrinking or expansion.

Maintenance

A balcony privacy screen made of plastic requires very little maintenance. Occasionally wiping it down when the balcony privacy screen gets dirty – is enough! On our blog you will find more information about cleaning our various plastics. For Trespa® (HPL), there is even a separate blog dedicated to cleaning and maintaining Trespa® (HPL)!
