Five important polyethylene properties
Thanks to its unique properties, polyethylene, also known as polyethene, HDPE and PE, is the most widely used plastic in the world. This material is widely used for packaging such as bottles, bags and film but is also used for larger applications such as gas and sewage pipes. In this blog, we’re going to look at the five most important polyethene properties.
1. Polyethylene is easy to work with
One of the most significant high-density polyethylene properties is that it is a thermoplastic material. This means that if polyethylene is heated, it becomes soft. This property means that polyethylene is easy to process and the material is suitable for a wide range of applications. It can even be welded do is very suitable for water and gas pipes as well as artificial joints. Polyethylene can also be sterilised so is often used in situations where hygiene is important such as hospitals and kitchens.
2. Polyethylene can be recycled
Polyethylene plastic melts easily so it is easy to recycle. On the other hand, there is also HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Find out more about the differences between high-density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene in our blog: “What is polyethylene (HDPE)?”
3. HDPE is very robust
The polyethylene (HDPE) that we stock in our webshop has a high density, so the material is rigid, durable and very strong. Thanks to its high degree of rigidity, PE can be used for pipes that are under pressure. It is very resistant to chemicals and higher temperatures and chemicals. Thanks to its cold-resistant properties (down to -30 ° C), polyethylene is also a widely-used material in the food industry, for example for freezer-friendly food containers and fish crates.
4. Polyethylene is not a conductor
Polyethene has a high electrical resistance unlike substances such as metals. This means that PE is not an electrical current conductor. On the other hand, it is a good insulator, blocking both heat and electricity. HDPE is also moisture resistant.
5. Polyethylene is affordable
Compared to other types of plastic, polyethylene is cheap. This is not only due to the low price of the raw materials and the low mass density but also because polythene has a very long service life.
