1Measuring

Start by accurately measuring your crawl space opening. Use your measuring tape or ruler; think of measurements like 40 cm for width and 60 cm for length. Remember to subtract 2.5 mm from each side. This will make it easier to fit and remove the hatch. Consider adding a handle, like a 5 cm diameter hole in the middle of one side.

2Ordering

Enter your custom measurements into the sheet calculator to ensure your Solid PVC sheet is cut exactly to size. Don’t forget to also include cut-outs, such as a handle, in the calculator, and order the High Tack adhesive straight away. Ensure the insulation material you use at least matches the dimensions of your crawl space opening, such as 60 cm by 80 cm, so you can cut it to size in the next step.

3Cutting

Saw the expanded polystyrene insulation material to size using a saw with fine teeth, like a hacksaw. Ensure the insulation material fits perfectly into the crawl space opening for optimal insulation and to keep out the cold air. This will help make your home more energy-efficient.

4Assembling

Next, assemble your crawl space hatch. Firmly glue the cut-to-size polystyrene insulation material to the underside of the Solid PVC sheet using the High Tack premium H980 adhesive. Bear in mind, while the kit bonds instantly, it reaches full strength after 24 hours. Avoid placing any weight on the hatch during this time. Once the glue has hardened, place your new crawl space hatch into the opening, ensuring a good seal.

5Tips & tricks

Lastly, here are some handy tips. Ensure there’s enough space around the hatch to easily remove and replace it. For additional insulation and a neat appearance, consider placing a doormat over the hatch. This hides the hatch and strengthens insulation. Test your handle to ensure it’s comfortable to use. These tips will help ensure your DIY crawl space hatch performs exactly as you expect!
