What thickness does the tabletop need?

Preferably, always choose a slightly thicker sheet as your tabletop. This is because there is a chance that the plastic is too thin and will warp if it doesn’t have a fixed mounting. A sheet that is too thin can also bend if it does not have enough support. So the thicker and heavier the sheet material, the less likely it is to bend.

In contrast, when placing acrylic on top of your current tabletop, even the thinnest thickness may suffice. The minimum thickness for an acrylic tabletop without an existing tabletop depends on how many support points you have. When the sheet is supported well, all around with a cross in the middle, the recommended thickness starts from 10 mm. The less support there is, the thicker the sheet should be.

Fixing your acrylic tabletop

There are several ways to attach your acrylic tabletop. To attach the tabletop to your frame – you can have ready-made holes drilled free of charge. You can also glue the tabletop, using the glue calculator to find the right glue for your project. Note: with acrylic, there is a chance that you will see the glue because these sheets are always slightly translucent. The thicker the sheets, the less translucent they are.

If you don’t want any visible holes in your tabletop, it is possible to use sheet metal screws. For this, you need a sheet with a minimum thickness of 10 mm. Drill holes on the underside of the sheet that do not come through the sheet. Then choose screws that are slightly larger than the diameter of the hole, e.g. 0.1 or 0.2 mm thick. Then simply secure the sheet, and you will have an even tabletop!

Acrylic tabletops can be used in various ways. Besides making a tabletop from acrylic, you can also use acrylic as a table protector, or you can make an entire table by bending acrylic. Read more about all the possibilities below.

1. Table protector

Wooden tables are beautiful but also pricey and prone to damage. You can protect your wooden table with glass or acrylic. This comes in handy if you have children or pets at home. An acrylic tabletop protector is as clear as glass and stronger. A glass tabletop is more easily broken from something impacting it than an acrylic tabletop.

So with an acrylic table protector, you can enjoy that beautiful warm wood look without having to be careful. Glass tabletops can withstand heat more than acrylic. But as long as you use coasters, this is not a problem.

2. DIY tabletop

Do you have a cool side table only the top needs replacing or do you want to make your side table more fun? This can be achieved with little effort. First decide what size and shape you want your tabletop to be, then select the acrylic sheet of your choice. You can choose from various colours and finishes, including fluorescent yellow, tinted or frost acrylic.

On the product page of your preference, enter the desired dimensions and any drill holes or cut-outs. You can also order a very unique shape, just upload your own DXF file.

Please note! Sheet materials need good support, otherwise the acrylic will bend or break under heavy load. The thicker the sheet material, the better.

3. Curved acrylic table

A sheet of acrylic can also be bent into a whole new table. Like, for example, this side table with a plastic tabletop or a transparent bedside tabletop. Want to bend acrylic but don’t have a bending machine? You can also heat bend acrylic with a burner.

What is acrylic?

Acrylic is a well-known plastic and is often used as a substitute for glass due to the material’s high transparency and light weight. Acrylic is also known as Perspex®. This versatile material is available in various colours and finishes, and in two distinguishable types.

Acrylic is made in two ways. This liquid material can be cast (GS) or extruded (XT). Cast acrylic, as the name suggests, is cast in a mould. Extruded acrylic is rolled in the mould, this rolling is also called extruding. This rolling increases the stress on the sheet. This is not the case with cast acrylic. So when you want to process acrylic yourself, we recommend you choose cast GS acrylic.

Processing acrylic

Extruded acrylic sheets have a higher internal stress than cast acrylic sheets. This makes them less suitable for post-processing. It is possible, but be extremely careful not to tear or break the sheet.

Do you want to perform multiple operations such as sawing, cutting, milling, drilling, engraving or (hot) bending? Then choose cast acrylic. These sheets are guaranteed stress-free, minimising the risk of cracking.
