Plastic ceilings have become hugely popular over the years. Some of our plastic sheets are great for creating a beautiful finished ceiling, such as a suspended ceiling or as an illuminated part of a ceiling. Why are so many people now choosing plastic tiles over other materials and what are the best plastic tiles for you?
Plastic ceiling coverings offer many different advantages. They are lightweight, durable, and resistant to mould, moisture and termites. This makes them ideally suited for use in damp rooms such as bathrooms. They also require minimal maintenance.
When choosing plastic sheets/tiles for ceilings, there are several options available, each with its own advantages. Here is an overview of the most popular plastic sheets for ceilings and the reasons for their suitability:
Acrylic is lightweight and comes in different types and designs. In addition, acrylic is also moisture resistant, easy to work with and recyclable. Did you know that a lot of acrylic is already recycled? Acrylic sheets are also ideal for spaces where aesthetics are important, such as living rooms or reception areas. Acrylic sheets are available in both clear and opaque varieties.
Polycarbonate is a strong and clear plastic that looks a lot like acrylic at first glance. It is also moisture resistant and recyclable, however polycarbonate is extremely impact resistant. This is why so many people choose polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is available in both clear and tinted varieties.
HPL is suitable for ceilings because it is impact resistant, moisture resistant, its ease of maintenance and aesthetic value. HPL can therefore be both functional and visually appealing for different types of rooms. HPL is an opaque material.
ACP (aluminium composite panels) is a versatile material often used for various applications, including ceilings. The light weight of the material combined with its attractive appearance is a reason why ACP is particularly suitable for use as a ceiling.
How does plastic compare to other popular ceiling materials such as wood and plasterboard? In this table, we give you a clear overview of the advantages and disadvantages of these different materials.
Material | Advantages | Disadvantages |
---|---|---|
Acrylic | Lightweight, shiny like glass, UV resistant | May scratch when used roughly. |
Polycarbonate | Strong, UV resistant, high impact resistant, transparent. | Can be more expensive than other options. |
HPL | Impact resistant, moisture resistant, easy care, scratch resistant, UV resistant | Relatively heavy |
ACP | Lightweight, aesthetic, moisture resistant, UV resistant | May scratch during rough use. |
Wood | Natural look, offers good insulation, versatile in design. | Requires maintenance, may shrink or expand, not always moisture resistant. |
Plasterboard | Fireproof, soundproof, smooth surface that is easy to paint, relatively cheap. | Not moisture resistant, can be damaged on impact. |

Maintaining a plastic ceiling is generally easy, mainly because plastic resists many of the problems that can affect other materials, such as moisture and mould. If it does require cleaning, use an anti-static cleaner combined with a soft cloth. On acrylic, ACP and polycarbonate, avoid abrasive cleaners or hard brushes as these can damage the surface of the plastic. Glass cleaner can also damage these types of plastic.
Although plastic is resistant to moisture, too much moisture in a room can lead to condensation on the ceiling. Ensure good ventilation, especially in rooms like bathrooms where moisture can be a problem.
