Christoph wanted to create the perfect wedding gift for his friends, who absolutely love hiking. This inspired him to design a unique wall sign made from three layers of acrylic glass to give it a striking 3D effect. During the creative process, he had an additional idea: crafting an oak wood stand to complement the sign. This way, his friends could choose to display the piece either as a wall decoration or standing proudly on a flat surface. The wall sign is not just versatile but also beautifully personalised – Christoph engraved the couple’s names and their wedding date onto the wooden stand. The stand is practical too. When the wall sign isn’t in use, it can double up as a stylish photo holder.
The project details
For the wall sign, Christoph worked with three types of acrylic glass – frosted, black, and white. By carefully layering and gluing these materials, the design took on its distinct 3D effect. Using basic woodworking tools, he crafted the oak stand and then laser-engraved the personalised details into the wood. This thoughtful project exemplified both creativity and functionality, and it’s something the couple can cherish forever.
Steps to create your own
steps
-
Design
Begin by sketching your design on a computer using design software that suits your needs. Have a clear plan of which pieces will come from each type of acrylic glass.
-
Gather
You’ll need three types of acrylic glass: frosted, black, and white. Be sure to measure and order the correct sizes for your design.
-
Cut
Cut each piece of acrylic glass to size using a laser cutter, bandsaw, or even by hand. If you’re working with black acrylic glass, cover it with painter’s tape beforehand to prevent unwanted marks while cutting.
-
Assemble
Use an acrylic-specific adhesive to securely glue the three layers together. Choosing the right glue is crucial to avoid any mishaps later.
-
Create
Craft the stand out of oak using a bandsaw. Once shaped, smooth it down with a file and sandpaper. To personalise it, engrave names or a significant date using a laser engraver – if you have one available.
