Making plastic wall cladding

It’s easy to transform your kitchen living room or hallway with plastic wall covering. Plastic panelling hides any worn areas and protects the wall from further damage. It’s a practical and stylish solution if your dog or cat enjoys scratching at the wallpaper. There are countless ways to create wall panelling, for example with wood, wallpaper, paint and of course, with plastic wall panels. In this blog, we’re going to demonstrate how to make your own plastic panelling and outline its advantages.

Types of plastic sheets for wall covering

If you’re planning on installing plastic wall cladding, we recommend using acrylic sheet or HPL. Both these types of plastic are low maintenance, easy to clean and very hardwearing. Furthermore, both HPL and acrylic sheet are water-resistant so these materials are ideal to use as wall cladding on the bathroom or garage. Acrylic and HPL come in a wide range of colours and finishes, so it’s easy to match the wall covering to your interior decor.

Attaching plastic wall covering made of acrylic sheet

It’s easy to fix your plastic wall panels using Bostik High Tack fixing adhesive. This strong adhesive is suitable for use on almost any surface. Thanks to the high initial adhesion, your plastic wall cladding panels will adhere well almost immediately. Simply apply the adhesive with a sealant gun.

Do you intend to use transparent acrylic for your wall cladding, such as clear perspex or fluorescent acrylic sheet? In this case, it’s best to use panel holders or spacers to attach the panels.

Installing HPL plastic wall cladding

For attaching HPL, we recommend using Bostik Paneltack bonding adhesive. Thanks to its ability to cope with differences in temperature, this elastic adhesive is perfect for attaching Trespa® and HPL panels. Before attaching the HPL panel, treat the wall with a primer. This improves the initial adhesion.

Why choose plastic wall covering?

Whether you plan to install panels of clear acrylic to protect your walls from pets scratching or intend to upgrade your garage with hardwearing HPL wall cladding, plastic is a sustainable choice. Both acrylic sheet and HPL panels are easy to clean. HPL is much more resistant to scratches than perspex. On the other hand, HPL sheets are much heavier in weight than acrylic. Before you decide, first think about the purpose of your wall cladding and choose the most suitable material based on this consideration. You can learn more about the properties of both types of plastic in our blogs about the properties of acrylic sheet and the properties of HPL.
