Bargeboards are designed to protect your home from weather such as wind, rain and snow so they have to be able to withstand the elements. They also need regular maintenance in the form of cleaning and repainting. Because of their location on the gable end of a house, this can be a rather difficult task. For this reason, many people opt to replace timber bargeboards with low maintenance plastic bargeboards from HPL.
Tips for replacing bargeboards
Bargeboard replacement is quite a complicated task so if you’re not very handy, it’s probably best to hire a professional. But if you’re good at DIY and follow our tips, you can make a successful job of it.
Tip 1: Proceed with care
The first step is to remove the old bargeboards. This must be done very carefully so as not to damage the roof.
Tip 2: Fill in the gap
HPL boards are much thinner than wood. To fix the bargeboards properly, you have to fill up the gap that remains. We recommend using a waterproof filler such as waterproof multiplex, for example.
Tip 3: Fix with screws
Your new bargeboards can be fixed in two ways: with glue or screws. We recommend that you choose the second option. Screwing the bargeboards gives you a stronger and more longlasting result.
Tip 4: Choose the correct position for the screw holes
Before you screw in the plastic barge boards, you must first drill holes in the correct position. Drill these holes at least 20 mm from the edge of the board so that they do not tear.
