A windbreak on your balcony will naturally keep the wind out. But a windbreak also provides shelter from other elements and adds more privacy. This makes your balcony, terrace or garden a lot more comfortable!

It is always easy to order a new windbreak for your balcony from Plasticsheetsshop. It is also possible to have your own desired drill holes or cut-outs milled. In this way, you do not have to use a saw or drill yourself, but can mount your panel immediately when it is delivered!

How do you reduce wind on your balcony?

The easiest way to reduce wind on your balcony is with windbreaks, glass windbreaks, retractable windbreaks, or by covering the balustrade. Find out more about these options below.

1. Windbreak
Windbreaks naturally reduce wind and other elements on your balcony. You can also choose from different colours and shades. They allow you to create more privacy or your own look. Of course, you can also choose a clear plastic one to keep enjoying the view.

A plastic windbreak is a safe choice. This is because plastic is stronger than glass, and if it breaks, it will not splinter like glass. You should attach your windbreak both to the side of your balcony and to the balustrade.

2. Covering the balustrade with a windbreak
You can easily cover your balustrade with plastics such as acrylic, polycarbonate and HPL. The non-transparent or tinted variants provide more privacy. The clear variants cover your balcony from the elements, you don’t lose the view.

3. A terrace windbreak with wheels
A terrace windbreak on wheels is a great option when you want a windbreak, but one that you can also move around. Acrylic and polycarbonate are the best options for a terrace windbreak on wheels because these materials are stronger, and also lighter than glass.

4. Roll up windbreaks
You can also opt for a roll up windbreak. You attach these to your balcony, and roll them out when you want to reduce wind. Roll up windbreaks are often pricey, and are often not very transparent.

5. Glass windbreaks
You can also opt for a glass windbreak. This is heavier than plastic and more fragile. In addition, glass is more difficult to work with than plastic.

How do you order a custom-made windbreak?

You can easily and quickly order your new customised windbreak in the order module on our product pages. First, measure your balcony or determine how big your windbreak should be. Then fill in the measurements on the product page of the material of your choice, and away you go!

It is also possible to indicate in the order module where you want to have cut-outs or drill holes. It is also possible to order your panel in a shape. If you want to order a very special shape, you can even upload your own DXF file drawing for your exact desired panel. Please take the drawing rules into account.

Windbreak thickness

The required thickness of a windbreak depends on the material you choose. The thicknesses are described below. These are based on mountings with at least 3 sides mounted, and one of the shortest sides free. We recommend a solid assembly so that the windbreak cannot deform due to shrinking and expanding, or be blown away by the wind.

Longest side up to 1 metre Longest side up to 1.5 metres Longest side up to 2 metres
HPL/ Trespa® 6 mm 6 mm 8 mm
Polycarbonate 5 mm 8 mm 10 mm
Acrylic 8 mm 10 mm 12 mm

Our advice

How do you choose a windbreak for your balcony?

It is wise to first know what your windbreak needs to do. For example, do you want a permanent windbreak, or one that you can move? Do you purely want to reduce wind without losing your view, or do you also want a bit more privacy? Based on these answers, we recommend you pick an appropriate acrylic, polycarbonate or HPL panel.

Mounting options

There are various ways of mounting a windbreak. The advice is to mount at least three long sides of the plastic sheet with rubber washers and screws. Make sure however, that no tension is put on the sheet. Because polycarbonate and acrylic can shrink or expand when the temperature rises or falls.

Furthermore, there are many ways to mount your windbreak. You can, for example, use bolts and elongated sheets. As long as you take into account that you should mount from three sides and allow for possible shrinking or expansion.
