1Examine the window structure

Begin with thorough preparation. Check how the pane is fitted in the frame. This guide targets windows with glazing beads. Look out for any adhesive or putty used. If so, you might need a multi-tool saw to remove the beads. Later, you can finish the back with fresh putty or triangular wooden beads.

2Remove the glazing beads

Precision is key when taking out glazing beads. Are there adhesives or sealant present? You might need a multi-tool saw to detach them. Be prepared for potential damage to old beads. Beads you can remove with a chisel and hammer are often reusable. Work carefully to avoid damage to the frame.

3Take out the old pane

Once the beads are off, carefully lift the old pane from the frame. Clean the frame thoroughly, especially removing any sealant remnants. A paint scraper can help clear them completely. Measure the pane using a tape measure, and allow a 3 mm gap on all sides for thermal expansion. Order your custom-sized pane with our sheet calculator.

4Custom-fit the glazing beads

If you’ve sawn off the old beads, it’s time for new, custom-fit glazing beads. Alternatively, order standard beads if available. Apply a primer to the new beads to provide a solid base for the paint.

5Prepare the window frame

Before fitting the new pane, you need to thoroughly degrease the window frame. This ensures strong adhesion. Now, place glazing tape around the frame to securely press the plastic sheet against it.

6Install the new pane

Use spacers of 3 mm thickness at at least four corners of the frame. This distributes the pane evenly and absorbs any vibrations. Clamp the new plastic pane in place. Secure the new glazing beads, using glazing tape, by stapling or gluing them, ensuring the pane is firmly anchored. Work meticulously to achieve a great sealed and secure attachment.

7Finish and paint

You’re making great progress, but finishing is crucial for a beautiful and lasting outcome. Seal joints with paintable sealant for extra protection against moisture and draughts. Choose a colour that matches your window frame.

Afterwards, you can paint the glazing beads and frame if you want them to match your interior or exterior. Apply the paint in thin, even layers for a stunning finish.

Naturally, you want your pane to be crystal clear. Use an anti-static cleaner to tidy up the sheet from dust and fingerprints.
