Tools

  • Sharp knife
  • Hammer and chisel
  • Degreaser
  • Anti-static cleaner
  • Suction cup handles
  • Tape measure
  • Staple gun or mounting glue

Materials

  • 10 mm wide glazing tape
  • 3 mm thick glazing spacers
  • Paintable sealant

1) Identify the type of window

First, check what type of window you have. This guide applies to windows with glazing beads, without sealant. Is your window secured with glazing beads? Then you’re all set to get started!

2) Remove old glazing beads and window

Use a hammer and chisel to gently loosen the glazing beads. Protect them, as they can be reused. For larger windows, suction cup handles are ideal for safe work. Don’t forget to remove any old sealant residue from the frame.

3) Measure and order the new window

Accurately measure the old window. Allow 3 mm of clearance for material expansion. Order your custom-sized acrylic or polycarbonate from us using our sheet calculator, for example, 1000 mm x 500 mm. Opt for polycarbonate for extra strength – perfect for a garden shed that has to withstand some heavy weather.

4) Apply glazing tape

Ensure the frame is clean and free from grease. Place the glazing tape around the frame. This provides a soft foundation and cushioning for the new window. Make sure the glazing tape is 10 mm wide for optimal grip.

5) Prepare and place the new window

Remove the protective film from the new window. Use glazing spacers in the corners to maintain the 3 mm clearance. This ensures the window is securely and precisely positioned.

6) Replace the glazing beads

Apply new glazing tape to the glazing beads and firmly refit them. Stapling or gluing – whichever you find most convenient.

7) Finish with sealant

Finally, apply a paintable sealant along the edges for a neat finish and protection against the elements. Don’t forget to clean the window with an anti-static cleaner after sealing. This keeps your new window looking pristine for years.
