Martin had a challenge: not enough storage space. His solution? A versatile sideboard with sliding doors that also works as a room divider. For the coloured sliding doors, he used our aluminium composite panels (ACP). The result is a functional piece of furniture that complements his functionalist interior and offers the flexibility to switch or remove the doors for a fresh look.
The project
Martin created a sideboard-bookcase inspired by the works of designer Charlotte Perriand. What makes this piece unique? The sliding doors on both sides can be easily removed. This allows you to experiment with different colour combinations or use it as an open bookshelf. Thanks to the sliding doors, it also works perfectly as a room divider.
The design combines repurposed stainless steel panels from an old rehabilitation centre, together with new materials. The sliding doors move seamlessly in milled grooves, and the entire frame is held together with invisible threaded rods.
Step-by-step guide
steps
-
Design
Sketch out how you want to use the sideboard now and in the future. Think about its dimensions and how it might adapt to different uses over time.
-
Gather
Order coloured ACP for your sliding doors from us. Collect oak for the shelves and legs, and stainless steel (or similar panels) for the sides.
-
Build
Start by assembling the frame using the oak shelves and legs. Attach the side panels, ensuring the structure is stable with threaded rods.
-
Mill
Make grooves at the top and bottom where the sliding doors will glide. Ensure these are wide enough for your aluminium composite panels.
-
Install
Place the coloured ACP into the grooves. Test to ensure they slide smoothly and can be easily removed for experimenting with colours.

Tips from Martin
“Think about modular use during the design phase; will it always stay in the same place? Can I use it differently in the future? I always let the (used) materials that I come across – guide my projects. When I have something in my hands, ideas come to life: what can I make with this? That’s a slightly different approach than gathering materials with the idea that it might come in handy someday. Then the stuff just piles up.”
